The A-Z of Men's Fashion – D

5 05 2011

I’m not really familiar with the comedian Stewart Lee but a mate tagged this on his facebook page and I almost died laughing:

… and I thought I didn’t like Richard Hammond!

In a weird way this ties in with today’s Men’s Fashion A-Z as we’re up to the letter D today and D is for denim! If you haven’t seen A-C yet, you can get there through the archive. How does Top Gear relate? Well besides having hideously misinformed political and social views, Clarkson is also a prime example of denim done badly.

Jeremy Clarkson fashion disaster

Horrifying.

I’ve come up with so many pros and cons for denim and have concluded that depending on fit and cut, a pair of jeans can be your best friends or your worst enemy. It’s amazing how something that started off as a regional material from France, originally called Serge, which was a wool/silk mix, de Nîmes (of Nîmes). Now it’s shortened to Denim!

The great thing about denim is that it’s hard wearing, versatile and has worked it’s way into smarter attire. The word Jean comes from the former republic of Genoa as their sailors used to wear them due to their versatility. There are so many cuts – bootcut, skinny, regular, slim, standard, straight, I could go on and on! There are also so many different types of material and I guess that’s where people generally go wrong… with so many options there’s more room for error so I’ll offer a couple of rules:

  1. Never go double denim (jeans and denim jacket), you’re not Kevin Bacon. Unless you are Kevin Bacon. Still, I stand by it!
  2. Jeans with a blazer/non denim jacket can work really well, but stonewash? I think not.
  3. Pick the right jean for your style. Try lots of types in the changing room, you’ll know when it works.
  4. Denim is fickle. Styles change every couple of years so make sure you update accordingly.

That’s it! If you still don’t know your selvedge from your standard fit, here are some great linked items from the net:
